John Lundstrom - Hall of Honor 2012

The 2012 Ankeny Alumni Hall of Honor inductee is John E. (Swede)  Lundstrom.  Standing next to John is his wife Deb.   Swede is one of Ankeny’s proudest residents.  He attended Ankeny schools from K-12th grades, graduating in 1947.  He served in the United State Army from 1951- 1953.   John worked for Ballard Feed Co. and attended Drake University after returning from military service.   In 1961, John started Lundstrom Realty in Ankeny and branched out to Des Moines and Urbandale.  He formed Ankeny Appraisal Service in 1966 which is still operating today.  

John’s love for the high school sports that he once played has continued since his graduation.  He worked in the press box for Ankeny High School for 20 plus years.  He has shown his love for Ankeny by volunteering his time towards several school and community activities:

 He has served or is servicing on the following boards:

  • Ankeny School Board for 12 years.  Board President  one year
  • Ankeny City Council for 8 years
  • Nevelyn Community Center board
  • Board of Adjustments for 10 years with the City of Ankeny
  • Polk County Airport Committee involving the Ankeny Airport  for 4 years
  • Ankeny area Chamber of Commerce – Chairman for one year
  • Greater Des Moines Affiliates Chamber of Commerce – Chairman for one year
  • Polk County Jail Ministries Board
  • Ankeny Community Theater Board
  • Committee member for the “Fallen Soldier Memorial Park in Somersby”, through the Ankeny Parks & Recreation 

John served and chaired in the following organizations:

  • Rotary Club of Ankeny
  • Lions Club
  • American Legion
  • Greater Des Moines Realtors
  • Gideon’s – Ankeny Camp

 Awards and Presentations:

  • Lettered in football, basketball and baseball at Ankeny High School
  • Ankeny’s Citizen of the Year in 1984
  • Realtor of the Year by the Greater Des Moines Realtors
  • Rotarian of the Year by the Ankeny Rotarians
  • Anderson & Erickson presented him a “Making Life Better” award
  • Outstanding Community Service by the City of Ankeny  
  • Ankeny Community Schools presented John the “Award of Merit” in recognition of his loyal service from 1963-1975

John and his wife Deb, have a blended family of 10 children, 17 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.  Eight of the children and nine grandchildren have graduated from Ankeny High School.  He enjoys fishing in Florida and Minnesota, traveling to new places and is an avid sports fan.  He is a dedicated father, husband and citizen to his family and community.
